The history of Naples, Italy


Naples, Italy was originally a Greek colony called Parthenope and was established by settlers in the 9th century BCE. It was named after the siren of Greek mythology. Near or around the 6th cnetury BCE, the city was renamed Neapolis and was the center of Greek culture and trade. The Greek language and the customs remained in use even after Romman conquest and influenced the Roman society.

Today, Naples is a blend of Greek, Roman Spanish, Italian, Byzanine, and Norman cultures. This blend of cultures can be seen in Naples' archiecute, art, and urban culture. Naples is also known for its vibrant music scene, which includes traditional Neapolitan music as well as modern genres. The city is also famous for its cuisine, particularly its pizza, which originated in Naples and is considered one of the best in the world.
